SEMINAR ON SINGAPORE STANDARDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

"IMPROVING CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY THROUGH SINGAPORE STANDARDS"

In conjunction with the World Standards Day celebration this year, PSB together with the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) are organising a seminar on some of the key Singapore Standards for the construction industry on 13 October 2000.

The 1-day seminar will feature some of the key Singapore Standards used in the construction industry on aggregates, cement, steel and concrete material specifications and codes of practice.
SS 2 : 1999 Steel for the reinforcement of concrete
SS 18 : 1999     Specification for cold-reduced steel wire for the reinforcement of concrete and the manufacture of welded fabric
SS 32 : 1999 Specification for welded steel fabric for the reinforcement of concrete

Test method specifications for `bend and rebend' tests and `tensile' testing
SS 31 : 1998 Aggregates from natural sources for concrete
SS 289 : 2000 Specification for concrete
SS 26 : 2000 Ordinary portland cement
SS 476 : 2000 High slag blastfurnace cement
SS 477 : 2000 Portland balstfurnace cements

Test method specifications for 'cement'
CP 65 : 1999   Structural use of concrete
CP 81 : 1999 Precast concrete slab and wall panels
CP 82 : 1999 Waterproofing of reinforced concrete buildings

Having construction design and materials meet the requirements of these standards will help raise the level of safety, quality and productivity of the construction industry, thereby reaping greater benefits to all parties. The seminar will serve as a good platform to inform the industry of the various Singapore Standards that will be used by BCA in their administrative requirements and regulations.

Speakers at the seminar who are from the industry and academia will highlight the salient points of the standards and their impact on the industry. CP 81 on Code of Practice on Precast Concrete Slab and Wall Panels is an example of a standard that will impact the industry, in the light of the legislation on buildable design to be effected next January to raise construction labour productivity.

This seminar provides an invaluable opportunity for the industry professional to receive a first hand and comprehensive update of the development of the Singapore Standards.
