Seminar on eLearning Standards

John Chambers, CEO of CISCO Systems, in his Keynote Address at Comdex 1999 stated that: "The next killer application for the Internet is going to be education. Education over the Internet is going to be so big that it is going to make email look like a rounding error."

With the knowledge-based economy, many are realising that learning and relearning are crucial to the individual and the organisation. This has resulted in individuals, vendors, companies and organisations rushing to deliver education and training on the web.

The Internet, as we know, is experiencing exponential growth partly because there are technology standards for many providers and users to follow. In the same way, for education over the Internet to take off in a big way, we need standards. A larger audience can be reached in a more consistent manner with the use of eLearning standards over the Internet. This would help to rein on problems such as difficulties in sharing learning resources and transform from one learning environment to another.

In conjunction with the World Standards Day, eLearning standards will be promoted in Singapore by the eLearning Standards Technical Committee (TC), the newest TC under the IT Standards Committee, through a half-day seminar. This half-day seminar intends to provide an overview of the major eLearning initiatives around the world together with the challenges facing the implementation of eLearning standards. It will highlight specific eLearning specifications, such as the IMS (Instructional Management Systems), the eBook and the XrML. Specific software tools and examples will be introduced and demonstrated. Participants will be able to understand better on how to proceed with the development of educational courseware based on the emerging eLearning standards.
