Need a Lift?

Since its introduction in the late nineteenth century, the lift has progressively become safer, more efficient and faster. The lift is arguably pivotal to the popularity of skyscrapers. In land-scarce and high-rise living Singapore, it is a convenience that many cannot do without.

In Singapore, SS CP 2, the Code of Practice for Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Electric Passenger and Goods Lifts is published by PSB. It applies to the design, construction, installation, testing, inspection, operation and maintenance of permanently installed new electric lifts with traction drive. The code has been revised by a Technical Committee, with the help of two Working Groups comprising experts from industry and government. It is now available in a Year 2000 edition.

In the revision of SS CP 2, comparisons were made with similar standards in Europe and US. New requirements and changes that were made included :

  • New requirements for door panels made of glass

  • Clearer requirements for emergency openings in lift well

  • New formula for calculating the rated loading capacity of the passenger lift that is for more than 40 persons or 2720kg load

  • Where required by the authority, there is a need for the lift to be brought to the alternate designated floor if there is a fire in the designated floor

  • References to EN 12015 and EN 12016 for electromagnetic compatibility

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Fire Safety and Shelter Bureau (FSSB) have decided to adopt the revised code as a reference standard from 1 October 2001 for projects with reference numbers lodged with BCA. Where there is no lodgement of project reference number, the revised Code shall apply to building plans submitted for approval from 1 October 2001.
