Singapore was nominated to join the Drafting Group for ISO/TC 207/SC 1/WG 1 which was tasked to develop the revised ISO 14001 standard. This took place at the ISO/TC 207 meetings held at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur from 1-8 July 2001, which was attended by about 500 delegates and observers. The other countries nominated are shown in the table below. Concurrent meetings were held throughout the week for international standards development work in Environmental Management Systems, Environmental Auditing & Related Investigations, Environmental Labelling, Life Cycle Assessment etc.

The Singapore delegation was led by Dr Loh Wah Sing from PSB Corporation Pte Ltd and comprised 5 technical experts and 10 observers. Singapore's technical experts are Mr Walter Yam from Philips Electronics Singapore Pte Ltd, Mr Chan Kean from Sony Electronics (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Assoc Prof Reginald Tan from National University of Singapore, Mr Srinivasan R from Novo Environmental Technology Services and Dr Peck Thian Guan from PSB Corporation Pte Ltd.

One of the main highlights of the meetings was the revision for ISO 14001:1996 Environmental Management Systems - Specification with Guidance for Use which is the international standard used in the certification for ISO 14001. The main intention of the revision was to improve the clarity of the standard as well as to align the standard with ISO 9001:2000 where relevant.

Our active participation in the development of the revised ISO 14001 is extremely important as this international standard is applied across all industry sectors world-wide. Direct involvement in the Drafting Group would allow the concerns and needs of our industry to be given due consideration in the international standardisation arena.

More than 80 delegates attended the Climate Change Workshop. The main outcomes from the discussion were the harmonisation of best practices and understanding of carbon measurement, verification and validation. There would be many new areas that require fresh approaches with multinational efforts, political wills and new technologies to address climate change issues in the near future. At the final plenary session, a member country informed the meeting that a new work item on Climate Change will be proposed for TC 207.
